The Day I Took Over Because It Was Easier
I said I was going to let them help.
I really meant it too.
We were making dinner, something simple and I thought, “This will be good. They can learn. We’ll do it together.”
But within minutes, it felt slow.
Messy.
Frustrating.
They were doing it wrong.
Too slow.
Not listening properly.
And before I even realised what I was doing, I stepped in.
“Just give it to me.”
I took over.
Again.
It’s funny how quickly good intentions can turn into control.
Not because we don’t care but because we care so much that we want it done right.
Done quicker.
Done easier.
Done without the stress.
But later that night, I sat there thinking…
Did they learn anything?
Or did they just learn that Mum will take over when it gets hard?
This is something I’m still working on.
Because the truth is
it is easier to just do it myself.
It’s easier to:
• Fold the washing properly
• Cook the meal quicker
• Clean without interruptions
But “easier” doesn’t always mean better.
Motherhood isn’t just about getting things done.
Little people who need time to learn…
space to try…
and grace when they don’t get it right.
Just like me.
So I’m learning to pause.
To take a breath when everything in me wants to rush in and fix it.
To say things like:
“Keep going, you’re learning.”
“Let me show you again.”
“It’s okay if it’s not perfect.”
Even when it takes longer.
Even when it’s messy.
Because one day…
They won’t need me to step in.
And I don’t want that day to come
with them feeling like they were never trusted to try.
If you’re like me tired, stretched, and just wanting to get through the day
this is your reminder:
You’re not failing because it feels hard.
You’re in the middle of teaching, shaping, and growing…
even in the messy kitchen moments.
Grace isn’t found in doing everything perfectly.
It’s found in slowing down enough
to let our children learn beside us.
With grace,
Ally xx
